Tour Overview

The goal of this tour is to bring you to places that are far-far off the beaten path. We'll be riding a combination of dirt and paved roads, but a majority of the tour is far away from paved roads.  The goal is not to challenge you with highly technical offroading skills, but rather to take you to places that few people ever see and experience. You can only get to these places by leaving the pavement and, sometimes, the roads altogether.  During this unforgettable tour we will leave the road completely behind when we load the motorcycles into a motorized canoe and float down the Napo River, deep in the Amazon River basin, through communities that are only accessible by this type of river canoe.  This is also a ride high into the Andes; into small, isolated villages that time has forgotten, where farming is still done with the help of animals and the pace of life is to a very different rhythm from the rest of the world.  We will not lack for comfort, however, staying in top-notch hotels, haciendas and lodges along the way with amazing meals, hot water and comfortable beds.  This tour is for intermediate to advanced level riders.  Endurance and stamina are required for portions of this trip particularly when we travel through the very remotest areas of Ecuador.

WARNING: This is not a normal motorcycle ride. This tour requires elements of endurance and stamina. Riders must be able to ride in adverse weather conditions and adverse road conditions and for long time periods of time  (up to 10 hours)

Day 1 - Chugchilan

CSC 0300 001

Day 1
Quito - Avenue of the Volcanoes - Isinlivi - Chugchilan
(98 miles - 50% offroad)

IMG 8672As with all of our dual-sport motorcycle tours, we will start riding the first day on a variety of different roads and conditions to make sure we understand where everyone's abilities are.  We'll head out of Quito, heading south on the famous "Avenue of Volcanoes", where the two mountain chains that run through Ecuador from North to South reach their most dramatic peaks while running side by side along this gorgeous stretch of highway.  Riding this beautiful road, we'll feel small as we move along at the feet of the snow-capped Cotopaxi and the Illiniza volcanoes.  Wood worker in Isinlivi

From here, we'll turn onto what is known as one of Ecuador's most scenic routes - the "Quilotoa Loop."  We'll climb in elevation as we pass by farmlands and small farming communites.  The pine and eucalyptus trees that line this road will bring great scents through our helmets.  We'll turn off a paved road, onto an ancient handmade cobblestone road that will bring us to an unpaved road that will climb to an unpaved mountain pass.  Reaching 13,500 feet, we'll get breathtaking views of the farmlands below and the volcanoes far off in the distance.   Here we will stop to add a layer of clothes and grab some dramatic photos.riding towards isinlivi

We'll pass through the small village of Isinlivi to visit with the local wood furniture makers and to get a view atop the pucara - the ruins of an ancient Incan battle fort - to get a 360 degree view of the landscapes around.  Then we will ride a combination of cobblestone and dirt roads, taking switchbacks to descend into a lush valley before we climb back into the town of day-1-riding-near-isiliviSigchos.  Sigchos was an indigenous trading post long before it was officially settled by the Spanish in the 1500's.  It has a rich history and very friendly and welcoming inhabitants.  The town is often bustling with a local farmers' market or other activities.  We'll continue to ride on this scenic road taking us along scenic cliffs.  We'll spend the night in the small village of Chugchilan at the internationally acclaimed ecolodge, Black Sheep Inn.

What to Expect

This trip has an activity rating of 5/5 and is one of the most demanding tour , meaning this tour will put you to the test physically; travelers should be in good health and comfortable riding for extended periods of time through adverse weather and at times unpredictable road conditions. The itinerary suits a wide range of interests and abilities, with options for light and moderate activities or more challenging hikes. Excursions include boarding boats, climbing stairs without handrails, longer hikes on uneven terrain with some steep ascents/descents, and optional adventure sports activities such as zip lines. Much of the trip takes place in remote areas where medical care can be several hours away. Please note there are two long riding days.

Weather and Temperatures
Weather and temperature ranges in Ecuador are generally the same year round. In the highlands, you can expect the chance of passing showers but rarely a full day of rain.  Chances for a full day of rain are more likely on the western slopes of the Andes in April and early May and in the Amazon basin in June and early July. There are no weather forecasts on Ecuador radio or TV stations; it is generally impossible to predict the weather in such a diverse number of climatic regions and elevations. On this tour, temperatures will be between 40 and 95 degrees fahrenheit (4-35 celsius).  The extreme cold temperatures are only experienced at the high elevation points (refer to the elevation profiles on this page).  These low temperatures are  typically brief. The weather for our journey on the canoe can be unpredicable, an impermiable layer is recommended to bring as well.

Throughout the tour, we stay in ideally located, high and medium-end accommodations with many amenities.  Laundry service is available on the 4th day. Look to the Accomodations tab for details and links of where you will be staying. Ecuador Freedom has the right to substitute accommodations of equal quality due to availability.

Ecuador Freedom will provide you with detailed information to prepare for the ride, including a packing list and tutorial videos.

Booking and cancellation policy

To secure your booking you need to pay 50% at the time of booking your rental or tour. Please contact us and we will send you a payment request from our secure payments provider (currently we use BlueSnap and PayPal)..Using our payments providers, you may pay with any major credit card or with your checking account.

Deposits are refundable minus 10% of the total rental or tour price only if cancelled at least 90 days prior to departure or pick-up date. Cancellations are very costly to us as they impede our planning and ability to sell rentals and tours to other customers. Therefore, cancellations for anyreason made less than 90 days before the pickup or departure date are not refundable nor may they be applied to a future rental or tour.

To protect yourself from this loss of your deposit, it is up to you to secure travel insurance that covers cancellations due to health problems, family tragedies or problems with flight departures, etc.

To get a free quote for travel insurance that will reimburse you in case you must cancel your trip (plus provide medical and repatriation coverage in case of an accident), just go to www.allianztravelinsurance.com and enter agency code F203715 which will indicate to them that you are travelling with us.

We highly recommend Ripcord Travel Insurance, a partner of ours.  They provide very extensive travel insurance plus outstanding repatriation and assistance in an emergency.  To purchase, just go to this page.

The balance (second 50%) of your rental or tour is due when you pick up the bike in our office in Quito.   The second 50% can be paid in cash or with a credit card.  We accept Mastercard, Visa, and American Express.
